Abstract

644,391. Gas filters. POOLE, R. Oct. 16, 1947, No. 18968. [Class 8(ii)] [Also in Group I] Filtering apparatus comprises one or more filter members of generally streamlined cross-sectional form arranged so as to be in the stream of gas to be filtered so that the gas flows past each member in a direction parallel or at a small angle to the longitudinal axis of its streamlined crosssections, the part of each member first met by the approaching gas being impervious while the rear part constitutes a filter element through which the gas can flow. As shown in Fig. 2, the members in the form of aircraft wings are arranged in staggered relationship in a duct through which gas flows, each member comprising an imperforate nose-portion B<SP>1</SP>, a perforated streamlined element B<SP>2</SP>, B<SP>3</SP>, and filling C of a mass of fibrous metallic or other material, e.g., steel wool. Longitudinal strengthening ribs B<SP>4</SP> are provided. In a modification, Fig. 5, the members are arranged at an angle to the direction of flow, on supporting members F, spacing members E<SP>1</SP> being provided at the ends of each member, so that when a screw F is operated to vary the angle of tilt, the filter members all move parallel to one another. According to the Provisional Specification the members may be mounted on or constitute a rotor of cylindrical form, the gas stream entering or leaving the interior of the cylinder by one end and leaving or entering a casing surrounding or partially surrounding the cylinder to provide radial flow. The cylinder may be rotated so that members come successively into line with the opening in the casing to perform their filtering function, while other elements are passing through a bath of wetting or cleaning liquid into which the lower part of the cylinder dips.
