[Class 100 (iii)] An automatic line centring and shifting device for a typographical composing machine comprises, for each of the two jaws between which the line is to be cast, a rack displaced by a set of pinions driven by a connecting rod pivotally secured to a lever rocking under the action of a cam keyed to a control shaft of the machine to control the spacing of the jaws. The rack 4, Figs. 1 and 4, of the jaw 2 is driven by a pinion 9, mounted freely on a shaft 11 in a housing 8 and driven by a toothed connection with a boss 13 frictionally mounted on the shaft, which is rotated by a pinion 22 driven by a rack 24 adjustable by a stop 37 and mounted on a rod 26 vertically reciprocated by a connecting rod 29 pivoted at 30 to a lever 28 actuated by a cam 27. The rack 7 of the jaw 5 is similarly actuated by a rack 25 also mounted on the rod 26. A hand control 21 rotates a cam 20 to slide the bosses on the shafts to engage or disengage the pinions so that either or both jaws are in operation, and a member 38 can be rotated to disconnect the rod 26 from the rod 29. A spring 36 acts to return the mechanism in the casing 8 to its inoperative position. The driving connection between the lever 28 and rod 29 comprises a rod 31 with a nut 35 and a spring 32 bearing against a cylinder 33 pivoted to the rod 29 and abutting the nut 35, so that when the jaws grip the type with the desired pressure, the spring 32 is compressed to avoid further jaw movement. Both jaws move inwardly an equal amount from positions controlled by the stops 37 for centring, while one jaw rests against its stop and the other is actuated for quadding. The cam 27 may be keyed to the shaft carrying the cam controlling the first elevator of the machine.
