Abstract

372,538. Hydraulic transmission of power. McLEOD, R. J. and COCKBURN, D. H., of Power Plant Co., West Drayton, Middlesex. April 23, 1931, No. 12049. [Class 69 (ii).] In fluid-operated feed mechanisms for gear cutting and other machines, the rise of pressure occasioned by the arrest of the feed is utilized to cause the return motion, means being preferably provided whereby the return is not initiated until a predetermined interval has elapsed after the stoppage of the feed. In the form shown, a tool or work holder J is operated by a screw I from a rack G carried by a piston f, a control valve D determining the direction of motion. The valve D is initially set by a lever d<1> so that feed takes place until an adjustable stop j contacts with a fixed abutment. The consequent rise of pressure in a supply pipe 12 then moves a spring-pressed valve L to admit pressure to a cylinder M to cause a plate N to rise and carry a pinion O into engagement with a pinion O<1> on a driven spindle a. The pinion O has adjustable cam members t, q, the former being adapted to move the upper end of a latch Q into the path of the latter. When the latch is tripped by the cam q, a spindle r<2> is operated by a spring s and the valve D is moved into position for the return motion by quadrants R, R<1>.
