[Class 83 (iii)] In a lathe or other machine tool wherein the speed at which a slide may be fed is limited by a dashpot, means are provided for pre-setting the rate at which the dashpot will operate and for bringing it into operation only during the cutting stroke. As applied to a turret lathe, the dashpot cylinder 10 is contained in a stationary housing 9 and the flow of oil, glycerine solution &c. caused by thepiston 11 is controlled by a needle valve 13, which is actuated by an oscillating plate 23 pivoted at 24, 24, on the housing 9. The plate 23 is oscillated by a member 20 coacting with a cam 22 on a rod 14, the member being carried by a bracket 21 on a sleeve 15 freely slidable on the rod 14. A lever 16 connects the sleeve 15 to the dashpot piston 11. Adjustable stops 18 are provided on a plate 17 which is indexable with the tool turret, the action being such that the turret may be moved freely to bring a tool to the work, but before engagement of the tool and work the appropriate stop 18 meets the end of the rod 14 to cause the cam 22 to set the valve 13 at the required adjustment for that tool, after which an adjustable collar 19 on the stop 18 engages the sleeve 15, whereupon further movement of the turret has its speed controlled by the dashpot. During the cutting traverse of the tool, the member 20 slides along the plate 23 without affecting the valve 13. Specifications 565,018, 565,019 and 565,021 are referred to.
