Abstract
a - and b -nuclear polyhalogenated phenylethylamines of general formula <FORM:0643676/IV (b)/1> where X is a halogen and n is an integer of not less than 2 or greater than 5 are prepared by reacting an a - or b -chloroethyl polyhalobenzene with alcoholic ammonia under pressure and at elevated temperature.ALSO:An insecticidal composition comprises a mixture of one or more nuclear polyhalogenated phenylethylamines and an added inert diluent. The amine is an alpha or beta nuclear polyhalogenated phenylethylamine of general formula <FORM:0643676/VI/1> where X is a halogen and n is an integer of not less than 2 or greater than 5 or a mixture of the said a and b forms. The amines are prepared by the method described in Group IV(b). They may be applied as solutions in kerosene; in solvents such as chlorinated tertiary butyl benzenes, in particular, dichloro tertiary butyl dichlorobenzenes, which have insecticidal properties per se; as aqueous emulsions and as dusts with powdered solids such as bentonite, pumice and talcum. Odorants such as linalol, geraniol, phenylethyl alcohol and tetradecanol and solubilizers such as isopropanol and xylene may also be present. The a - and b - di- and tri-chlorophenylamines are particularly effective.
