Abstract

<PICT:0643606/IV (b)/1> In the synthesis of hydrocarbons and oxygenated derivatives from carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a fluidized bed of iron catalyst, excess heat is removed by a cooling medium maintained at such a temperature that the coefficient of heat transfer, and the temperature differential between the bed and the cooling medium are correlated to give a rate of heat transfer in the region of its maximum. When the bed of catalyst is at 625-775 DEG F., the cooling medium should not be maintained below about 600-650 DEG F., at pressures of 500-800 p.s.i. For pressures below 200 p.s.i., however, say from 100-200, the cooling medium should be at about 400-450 DEG F. Thus within the general range of 100-800 p.s.i., the cooling medium should be within the range 400-650 DEG F. For pressures of 200-500 p.s.i., the temperature difference between the bed and cooling medium is preferably not more than about 150 DEG F. The reactor 1 may comprise a foraminous member 2 for entry of feed gas into the bed of catalyst C surrounding a bank of cooling tubes 3 through which a cooling medium circulates through lines 23, 24 and boiler drum 20. This medium also circulates through a jacket 6 via lines 25, 26.ALSO:In the synthesis of hydrocarbons and oxygenated derivatives from carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a fluidized bed of iron catalyst, excess heat is removed by a cooling medium maintained at such a temperature that the coefficient of heat transfer, and the temperature differential between the bed and the cooling medium are correlated to give a rate of heat transfer in the region of its maximum. When the catalyst is at 625-775 DEG F., the cooling medium should not be maintained below about 600-650 DEG F., at <PICT:0643606/III/1> pressures of 500-800 p.s.i. For pressures below 200 p.s.i., however, say from 100-200, the cooling medium should be at about 400-450 DEG F. Thus, within the general range of 100-800 p.s.i., the cooling medium should be within the range 400-650 DEG F. For pressures of 200-500 p.s.i., the temperature difference between the bed and cooling medium is preferably not more than about 150 DEG F. The reactor 1 may comprise a foraminous member 2 for entry of feed gas into the bed of catalyst C surrounding a bank of cooling tubes 3 through which a cooling medium circulates through lines 23, 24 and boiler drum 20.
