Abstract

643,363. Electrostatic precipitation. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Oct. 14, 1947, No. 27520. Convention date, Oct. 30, 1946. [Class 39 (i)] Back ionization in the ionizing zone of a twostage precipitation is reduced by cooling one or more of the non-discharging electrodes to a temperature below that of the gas under treatment by the passage of cooling fluid therethrough out of contact with the gas. A two-stage precipitator of the kind described in Specification 475,443 comprises an ionizing stage A, Fig. 1 and a precipitation stage B, both mounted in a duct C. Cooling fluid from a pump 32 and heat exchanger or cooler 34 is supplied through tubular non-discharging electrodes 22, which extend between headers formed on opposite sides by the supporting rectangular frame 4, mounted in the casing C. The outer tubular electrodes 20 are sealed to the frame 4 throughout their length so that they have a semicircular cross-section. The wire discharging positive electrodes extend between arms 44 supported by insulators 40 carried by a bar 38. Electrode dimensions and potentials are specified; the electrodes 20, 22 may consist of aluminium, coated iron or of stainless steel. The precipitation stage B comprises discharging and non-discharging plate electrodes 46, 48 arranged alternately. In a modification, the supporting frame 4, Fig. 5, has the waterheaders 50 subdivided by partitions 54, 56 so that the cooling liquid circulates through pairs of non-discharging electrodes 64, 68 in parallel. Dust-scraping rings 62, 66 are reciprocated through rods 70, which are shown displaced by 90 degrees from their operating position. Curves are included to show the maximum temperature of the non-discharging electrodes permissible for various electrode voltages without back-ionization in air treated for the removal of silica dust, and show also permissible temperature with varying dew points of the treated air. The cooled electrodes may be washed by the flow of condensate collected by troughs 82, Fig. 8, fixed on sloping sides 80 by the supporting frame. A pipe 84 may connect the water-cooling headers of adjacent units.
