Abstract
642,940. Fluid bearings. GERARD, P. L. J. July 25, 1946, No. 15180/49. Divided out of and addition to 642,891 under which a Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, July 25, 1946. [Class 12 (i)] The surface of a fluid bearing supporting or guiding a movable element has a series of circumferentially wide fluid receiving chambers each spaced by two circumferentially narrow similar chambers, and all the chambers are spaced by longitudinally extending fluid discharging or conveying grooves, the movable element being centralised by the throttling effect on the fluid flowing from the chambers to the grooves via the bearing surface. As shown, a shaft 1 is supported in a bushing 2 having peripheral annular grooves g<SP>1</SP> and g<SP>5</SP> in communication with inlet and outlet conduits 6, 5. The bushing bore has three circumferentially wide chambers a connected respectively by passages c<SP>2</SP> ... c<SP>4</SP> with intermediate peripheral annular grooves g<SP>2</SP> ... g<SP>4</SP> and each chamber is spaced by two circumferentially narrow fluid receiving chambers a<SP>1</SP> connected by passages c<SP>1</SP> to the groove g<SP>1</SP>. Between each pair of chambers a<SP>1</SP> is a longitudinally extending groove b connected to its diametrically opposite chamber a by further respective passages c<SP>2</SP> ... c<SP>4</SP> communicating with the grooves g<SP>2</SP> ...g<SP>4</SP>. Between each pair of chambers a, a<SP>1</SP> is a longitudinally extending groove b connected by a passage c<SP>5</SP> with the annular groove g<SP>5</SP>. Fluid flows into the groove g<SP>1</SP> and to the passages c<SP>1</SP> and both narrow chambers a<SP>1</SP> of each group, from whence it passes along the bearing surface to the middle groove b and via the appropriate passages c<SP>2</SP>, g<SP>2</SP> ... c<SP>4</SP>, g' to the diametrically opposite wide chamber a, and. again via the bearing surface to the adjacent grooves b, through the passages c<SP>5</SP>, groove g<SP>5</SP> to the outlet conduit 5. Any tendency of the shaft to contact the bushing for example, in the region of the lower chamber a, is countered, on widening of the opposite bearing gap between the receiving chambers a<SP>1</SP> and middle groove b and construction of the bearing gap between the chamber a and its discharge grooves b, by the consequent changes in fluid pressure. The circuit, being symmetrical, balances the shaft in all directions.
