[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Aug. 28, 1947.] [Class 100 (iv)] A typewriter or like machine for lettering drawings or the like resting on a supporting surface 12, is arranged on a carriage permitting a letter-space movement over the surface 12 at each operation of a type key and a second carriage which can be raised and lowered in the machine frame when a line-shift lever is operated to effect line spacing. Letter-spacing.-At each operation of a type key 2 and key lever 9, a hook 24 engages a transverse rod 26a to pivot a lever 26 and draw downwardly a member 27 which when released by the return movement of the key lever allows a clockwork motor 18 to drive rollers 16 so that the machine traverses one letter space. The power from the motor 18 to the rollers 16 is transmitted by a belt drive 20, 21, 22. Line-spacing.-To effect line spacing the whole machine can be moved by means of a lever 31, Fig. 4, which raises the machine frame 1 carrying the rollers 16 by the depression of a pair of beams 29 carrying rollers 28 and forming the second carriage. The lever 31 can be moved in either direction to effect backward or forward line-spacing, and after the frame 1 has been raised by extensions 33 of the lever 31, a push-rod 35 or 35<SP>1</SP> is depressed into engagement with a ratchet fast to the rollers 28, so as to move the carriage a distance equivalent to one line space. Spring and roller devices 43, 42 maintain the rods 35, 35<SP>1</SP> in contact with rollers 44 on arms 45 of the beams 29 so that the ratchets 39 are engaged bv the rods when the frame is in the raised position.
