642,674. Gearing for converting rotary into reciprocating motion. HAMILTON, A. E. Aug. 6, 1947, No. 21448. Convention date, Sept. 20, 1939. [Class 80(i)] [Also in Group XXIII] In a machine for surfacing strip or sheet material, a slide carrying the grinding or polishing elements is moved back and forth by a connecting rod 63, Fig. 2a, secured to a crank pin 62 on a shaft 57 mounted eccentrically in a head 55 integral with a shaft 54 which is rotated through gearing by an electric motor. A pinion 56 secured to the shaft 57 meshes with a stationary ring gear 60. The crank pin 62 is thus given a planetary motion, and a vibratory motion is thus superimposed on the reciprocatory motion of the slide. In a modification, Fig. 8, the crank pin 62 is connected by a link 170 to a block 171 adjustable by a screw 176 in one arm 172 of a bell-crank pivoted at 173, the other arm of the bell-crank being connected by a link 175 with the slide.
