Abstract

A composition of increased tensile strength comprises a substantially oil-free predominantly straight chain paraffin wax containing 25 to 40 carbon atoms per molecule and capable of forming a hard macro-crystalline structure and 0.5 to 10 per cent of a straight chain polyalkylene, e.g. polyethylene, having an average molecular weight of at least 6000. The waxes specified have a melting point between 53 DEG and 77 DEG C. and a ring value of zero. The compositions may be prepared by mixing small pieces of polythene and wax in equal quantities, heating at 110 DEG C., working with a spatula until homogeneous and gradually blending in the remainder of the wax, e.g. by mechanical rubbing. Powdered graphite, dyes, pigments and corrosion inhibitors, e.g. dicyclohexylamine nitrite, may be added. The molten compositions may be used for coating by dipping or spraying.
