Abstract
641,993. Rail joints. WIRTH, A. Dec. 30, 1947, No. 34889. Convention date, Nov. 15, 1941. [Class 104 (ii)] [Also in Group XVIII] In a railway weighbridge the gaps B between the incoming track rails 3 and the weighbridge rails 1 are bridged by a plate 17 which is loosely secured by members 15 to the rail supports 4, and is outwardly curved so that it takes the weight of the truck when it passes over said gap. The members 15 are constructed to allow the plates 17 a limited amount of lateral and longitudinal play and yet prevent them from jumping out. The bottom of each plate 17 is supported on cylindrical members 20 which determine the position of the top of said plate and are replaceable by others of varying size to allow for wear adjustment. Each rail is held from lateral movement by plates 7, 8 which allow a limited amount of vertical movement of the loaded rail and also longitudinal heat expansion which is limited by stops 23. In modifications (not shown) the plate 17 may be replaced by a length of rail of smaller section, or the plate may have a flat top surface and, at the gap B, the rails are curved to allow the plate to support the loads as before. When the invention is applied to narrow gauge tracks, to ensure that the wheel profile is engaged by the plates the rail head is cut away as shown in plan in Fig. 7.
