Abstract

Silicon esters, viz. lower alkyl orthosilicates and polymers thereof, or alkyl-substituted alkoxysilanes (in which alkyl or alkoxy groups contain not more than 5 carbon atoms), and containing less than 5 per cent of a condensing agent such as piperidine, dicyclohexylamine morpholine, triethylamine or cyclohexylamine, having a pKa value greater than 7.8, are emulsified by agitating with water and an emulsifying agent, such as sodium alginate, stearic acid, aluminium stearate, oleic acid, triethanolamine oleate or triethanolamine stearate. The two latter produce ester-in-water emulsions whereas sodium alginate produces water-in-ester type. In examples emulsions are prepared with: (1) ethyl silicate containing piperidine and water containing sodium alginate; such emulsions are compatible with polythene latex; (2) ethyl silicate containing dicyclohexylamine and water containing sodium alginate; and in (3) ethyl silicate containing monoethanolamine was mixed with triethanolamine oleate to provide a stable mixture which could be emulsified with water. The emulsions remain stable for a time sufficient to allow them to be used as coating compositions, e.g. for fire-proofing textiles, delustring silk or giving anti-slip properties to synthetic fibres, or for admixture with hydraulic cements or for bonding refractories such as sillimanite or alumina. Emulsions of the products obtained by polymerizing silicon esters as in Specification 621,742, may be used as binding agents for porous fillers such as paper pulp to produce mouldings or for laminated materials and boards. Specifications 575,752 and 612,622 also are referred to.ALSO:Silicon esters, viz. lower alkyl orthosilicates and polymers thereof or alkyl substituted alkoxysilanes (in which alkyl or alkoxy groups contain not more than 5 carbon atoms) containing less than 5 per cent of a condensing agent such as piperidine, dicyclohexylamine, morpholine, triethylamine or cyclohexylamine, having a pKa value greater than 7.8, are emulsified by agitating with water and an emulsifying agent, such as sodium alginate, stearic acid, aluminium stearate, oleic acid, triethanolamine oleate or triethanolamine stearate.
