Abstract
When a concrete railway sleeper is moulded internal thread linings formed by one of the methods described in Specifications 609,485, 621,984 and 641,444, which essentially involve winding a metal strip on a mandrel into a helical-shaped coil of which the edges overlap, are placed in the mould either before or after the concrete but before the concrete sets or vibration is applied and the concrete is allowed to set and harden with the internal thread linings in position, so that they are permanently embedded. Before putting a lining into a mould the mandrel on which it was formed is replaced by a screw and the assembly coated with hard insulating material. The coated assemblies are positioned by a jig, care being taken that the screws do not touch the concrete. The screws are removed when the concrete has set. Instead of metal the linings may be made of fabric impregnated with an insulating synthetic resin. The linings may be coated with rubber to absorb shock and prevent loosening.
