Abstract
A composition, suitable as a hair dressing, is composed of two separate phases, viz. an oil phase and an aqueous phase, capable of forming an emulsion on slight agitation and of separating again a short time after agitation ceases, the oil phase comprising a non-drying vegetable oil and an oil-soluble emulsifying agent and the aqueous phase comprising water, a cationic surface-active agent and ethyl, propyl or isopropyl alcohol. Specified oils, which may be refined prior to use by treatment with water and carbon dioxide, are olive, cottonseed, peanut, soya bean and castor oils. The oil-soluble emulsifying agent may be a partial fatty acid ester of a polyhydroxy compound, preferably a partial ester of polyalkylene oxide derivatives of a polyhydroxy alcohol, e.g. the partial ester of a polyethylene oxide derivative of propylene glycol glucoside. Specified fatty acids employed in forming the partial ester are lauric, myristic, palmitic, oleic and stearic acids. The cationic surface-active agent is preferably a quaternary ammonium compound, examples of which are given. Anti-oxidants are preferably added to both phases; tocopherols to the oil phase and hydroxy dicarboxylic acids, e.g. tartaric, citric, tartronic, malic, hydroxy succinic or their acid or neutral alkali-metal salts, e.g. sodium bitartrate, to the aqueous phase. Perfume may be added to the oil phase and sodium chloride to the aqueous phase.ALSO:A hair dressing is composed of two separate phases, viz., an oil phase and an aqueous phase, capable of forming an emulsion on slight agitation and of separating again a short time after agitation ceases, the oil phase comprising a non-drying vegetable oil and an oil-soluble emulsifying agent and the aqueous phase comprising water, a cationie surface active agent and ethyl, propyl or isopropyl alcohol.
