Abstract

641,011. Supersonic inspection devices. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 26, 1947, No. 31340. Convention date, Nov. 26, 1946. [Class 118 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIX] A piezo-electric crystal holder suitable for use in testing a conductive solid material 6 for the presence of internal defects by supersonic energy comprises a metallic cylindrical casing 1., 3 with a circular aperture 2 in the end which is held in contact with the material and means for mounting the crystal 19 in the aperture by a spring support so that the pressure between the crystal and the material is maintained constant. The crystal is mounted on a metal plate 20 attached to a piston-like dielectric annular disc 21, the assembly being urged towards the aperture by a compressed spiral spring 23 one end of which bears on the metal plate 20 and the other end being seated in a metallic dish 12 mounted on the end of a hollow cylindrical dielectric member 9. The spring also serves to make an electrical series connection between the crystal and an inductance coil 8, the inductance being adjusted to resonate with the crystal by the adjustable brass or powdered-iron core 13. The low impedance of the series resonant combination enables it to be matched to a coaxial line feeder coupled to the connector 11 and the voltage applied to the crystal will be greater than the line voltage. The outer surface of the crystal is connected to the outer conductor of the connector via the material 6 and casing 1, 3. When using the pulse method of testing, a D.C. waveform as shown in Fig. 2 is applied to the coaxial line to produce recurrent damped wave trains, Fig. 3.
