Abstract

640,762. Control of rolling mills. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DU DURALUMIN ET DU CUIVRE. Aug. 11, 1948, No. 21204. Convention date, Aug. 20, 1947. [Class 40 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] The inching motors of a rolling mill are controlled by the difference between a potential proportional to actual roller spacing, and a potential proportional to the required gap. Commutator type potentiometers 2, 10 controlled by the roller spacing and the required gap setting respectively have their tapping points connected through polarized relays 5, 6, which control the inching motor contactors 7, 8 to drive the rollers and hence potentiometer 2 into correspondence with 10. The setting potentiometer 10 is servodriven by a motor 9 controlled by a follow-up switch comprising a pair of contact brushes adapted to be displaced by the required gap setting and bridged by a drum 14 driven by the motor, until an insulating part 25 reaches the brushes. Alternatively a number of preset potentiometers corresponding to the number of gap adjustments are consecutively connected in circuit by cam-operated switches, Fig. 5 (not shown), or the potentiometers may be replaced by induction regulators.
