Abstract
The tendency towards excessive shrinkage after setting of a magnesium oxychloride cement produced from a mixture including magnesium oxide in a form which normally imparts such tendency to the cement, is reduced by mixing the magnesium oxide with magnesium chloride and water in the presence of a water-soluble salt of a phosphoric acid having a lower proportion of combined molecules of water than orthophosphoric acid, examples of suitable salts being sodium triphosphate, sodium tetraphosphate, sodium pyrophosphate and acid pyrophosphate, sodium metaphosphate and polymetaphosphate, and Na14P8O27. The invention applies particularly to cement produced from magnesium oxide derived from seawater, and the phosphate is preferably mixed with the magnesium oxide before mixing with the magnesium chloride. The cement composition may also contain sand, limestone, asbestos and ferric oxide. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to the use of these phosphates to inhibit hydration of magnesium oxide in other fields than oxychloride cements, such as inhibiting the thickening of a magnesium oxide slurry. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
