Abstract
638,826. Granulating metals. AMERICAN FOUNDRY EQUIPMENT CO. Oct. 30, 1946, No. 32206. Convention date, Nov 1, 1945. [Class 82(ii)] In the making of metal particles, a pulsating blast of dispersed liquid particles is directed at high velocity against a molten stream of the metal. The apparatus may be employed in an inert or reducing atmosphere. As shown, molten metal from a tiltable furnace 10 is supplied by an adjustable trough 11 into a metering dish 12 having a comparatively wide and thin rectangular orifice 26 surrounded by a U- shaped wind guard 57, the trough 11, dish 12 and orifice 26 being made of refractorylined metal. A pump supplies water and/ or oil to a blast wheel 13, similar to that described in Specification 441,466, [Group XXVI], and comprising substantially radial blades 39 removably mounted in recesses in side plates one of which carries a central stationary but adjustable control cage 41. The circumferential wall of the latter has a discharge opening 43 making a close fit with the inner edges of the blades 39 which are partially surrounded by a shroud 54. The blades deliver the liquid in a rapid succession of ribbons or layers 60 forming a substantially tangential downwardly-directed and slightly flaring arc 15 and striking the molten metal stream 23 at an acute angle close to the orifice 26 to disintegrate it into particles 23. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states also that the orifice 26 may be of square cross-section. This subject - matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
