638,559. Automatic control systems. MILSOM, F. R., FURZEHILL LABORATORIES, Ltd., and SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND), Ltd., S. June 4, 1947, No. 14824. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVII] In an automatic control system in which a signal representing the change of a condition is amplified and applied to maintain a datum condition, as in Specification 617,240, the gain of the amplifier is varied inversely as the rate of change of the difference between the two output currents of the amplifier. As shown, the A.C. error signal which is applied at the terminals 12, controls the excitation of the field windings 22, 23 and thus also the torque of the corrector motor 20 energized from the generator 25. The windings 18, 19, the D.C. currents through which are dependent on the amplitude of the error signal, control the impedances of the variable inductances 33, 33a and 34, 34a, in series with fields 22, 23, the currents through which develop D.C. potentials across resistors 26, 27. The latter voltages are applied to the primary of transformer 35, the secondary of which develops a voltage during change of the error signal, which determines the A.C. output of the ring modulator 53, 54, 55, 56 which acts in series opposition to the error signal.
