[Classes 78 (i) and 78 (v)] The loop take-up drum of an endless belt conveyer is connected by means of a rope to a winding drum mounted on a shaft adapted to be rotated by means of a rack and pinion. The conveyer belt 1 is passed around take-up drum 2 mounted in blocks 3 slidable in the framework and moved thereon by means of wire ropes 4 which pass around a winding drum 5. The drum 5 is mounted upon a shaft 6 fast on which is a pinion 8 engaged by a reversible pawl 9 pivoted on casing 7 to allow rotation in one direction only. Adjacent the pinion 8 is a freely mounted worm wheel 10 engaged by a worm 11 adapted to be rotated by a handle. Also freely mounted on shaft 6 is a pinion 14a engaged by a reversible pawl 15 carried by a freely mounted pinion 16 meshing with a rack 17 which is mounted on a hydraulic cylinder 18 and adapted to be moved along a stationary shaft 19 by admitting pressure fluid through holes in the shaft from either end. A reversing valve 20 enables the direction of flow to be changed, the fluid being pumped by a hand pump 22 or a motor (not shown). Either the worm wheel 10 or pinion 14a may be coupled to shaft 6 by means of the sliding element 13 of a dog clutch controlled by a lever 14. For a large movement shaft 6 may be racked in stages by cylinder 18, pawl 15 allowing free wheeling on the return stroke. Shaft 6 may also be turned directly by a handle applied to its end 23.
