Abstract

- 637,621. Pneumatic tyres. ARNOLD, J. C. (National-Standard Co.). March 3, 1948, No. 6720. [Class 144 (i)] Apparatus for use in the manufacture of tyre covers by the flat-band process comprises a main building - drum 4 mounted between auxiliary drums 6, 10 axially displaceable with respect to the main drum, the drum 10 being normally of lesser diameter than the drums 4, 6 but adaptable to increased diameter. As shown, the drum 10 is fitted with an inflatable. air-bag 11 on which (whilst collapsed) the tyre-casing plies 19 are laid. A hollow cylinder 14 is then moved into the position shown in Fig. 4, and the bag 11 inflated to force the band 19 into adhesive contact with the inner periphery of the cylinder 14. The latter is then moved into the position shown in Fig. 6 where it completely overlies the drums 4, 6 with the trailing edge of the band 19 folded under a narrow drum 17 of the same diameter as the drum 4. The drum 10 is then retracted (Fig. 7) leaving the band 19 on the drum 4 and the auxiliary drums 6, 17. Finally, the latter are moved clear of the main drum (Fig. 8) leaving edge flaps 20, 21 of the band 19 in position to receive the bead elements. As shown in Fig. 10, the rigid cylinder 14 may be replaced by a series of endless webs 50 traversing rollers 51, 52 on a framework comprising channelled racks 53 ... 56 driven by pinions 57 ... 60 and bevel gears 49 from a motor 48.
