Abstract
637,014. Auxiliary engine units for bicycles. SOC. POUR TOUS APPAREILLAGES MECANIQUES S.A.T.A.M. Feb. 20, 1947, Nos. 5029 and. 5030. Convention dates, Sept. 26, 1940, and Sept 16, 1941. [Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (iii)] An auxiliary engine unit 4 is pivoted about a horizontal axis 8 on the frame of a bicycle or like vehicle and is arranged between the planes swept by the pedal cranks and the driven pinion 3 of an engine reduction gear can be engaged with an annular gear ring 2 integral with the chain wheel 1 by pivotal movement of the engine unit 4. The pivotal movement may be hand or foot controlled. As shown in Fig. 4 the pivot 8 is secured to a bracket 9 which is pivoted at 17 to a bracket 10, the brackets 9, 10 embrace the bottom bracket of the frame and are secured together through the chain stays. The pivot 17 rides in a slot 23 formed on the engine and a projection 24 of the engine unit carries a pawl 25 connected by a cable 26 operated by a handle or lever located on the handle bar of the bicycle. The cable 26 is operated so with the pawl 25 in the position' indicated in dotted lines the pinion 3 is disengaged from the gear ring and with the pawl in the position shown in full lines the pinion 3 is engaged with the gear ring 2 as shown, the' pivotal movement of the engine unit being limited by an adjustable screw 27 thereon bearing against the bracket 9. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also comprises a construction in which the engine unit is rigidly mounted on the frame between the pedals, and an engine driven pinion is constantly in mesh with a gear ring rotatable on the chain wheel, the chain wheel and gear ring being connectable by a pin. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
