Abstract

636,744. Gravity-separation apparatus. COMPAGNIE DE PRODUITS CHIMIQUES ET ELECTROMETALLURGIQUES ALAIS, FROGES, & CAMARGUE. April 21, 1947, No. 10592. Convention date, May 15, 1946. [Class 46] [Also in Group II] In apparatus for separating and forming suspensions of solids in liquids, a cylindrical settlement tank 1, Fig. 1, having a conical bottom 2 has attached to the bottom 2 a cylindrical conduit 8, of diameter equal to or smaller than that of the tank, provided with internal baffles formed by cones 10 and funnels 11, down which settled solid material flows to a discharge orifice 7, and up which passes a diluting, washing or substitution liquid from a funnel 61. Inside the tank 1 are provided a sleeve 3 and within it a cylinder 12 separated by a narrow gap from the tank bottom 2, and having a narrower portion 13 at the top. A stirrer 9 may be provided. The suspension is fed into the sleeve 3, the heaviest particles collecting upon the cone 2, and the lighter particles flowing out through a side tube 4 with the greater part of the suspension liquid. A less dense washing or substitution liquid is introduced into the funnel 61, a part of this liquid escaping with the heavy particles through a pipe 7 in a jacket 5, and the remainder flowing up the cylinder 8 where it mixes with the liquid of the initial suspension and becomes partly substituted for it. The mixture of the two liquids reaching the top of the conduit 8 flows up the cylinder 12 and through the orifice 13 into the sleeve 3. The orifice 13 is slightly above the level of the suspension inside the sleeve 3 to prevent the suspension passing into the cylinder 12. If the liquid introduced at 6<SP>1</SP> is denser than that of the suspension, the cylinder 12 may be dispensed with. The cones 10 and funnels 11 may be replaced by other mixing devices. Fig. 2 shows the conduit part of the device combined with classifying apparatus. The suspension to be treated is introduced through a tangential pipe 14, the heavy particles thus collecting on the wall of the tank 1 and by-passing a diaphragm 15 to fall on the cone 2. A suspension of lighter particles deflected by the diaphragm 15 flows upwards between two cylinders 3 and 16 and out by a tube 4 ; froth and very light particles pass upwards between the cylinder 16 and a tube 17 and out by a tube 18. Suspension containing light particles which has flowed past the diaphragm 15 returns to the supply through the tube 17.
