Abstract
Quaternary salts of the general formula <FORM:0636648/IV (b)/1> where Ph is a phenylene residue, R1 is methyl or ethyl, R is an aliphatic radical of 1-7 carbon atoms, A is a divalent hydrocarbon residue and X is an acid radical, preferably a halogen atom such as iodine, are prepared by treating the corresponding amine with an alkyl salt or ester RX. The group A is preferably an alkane chain of 2-6 carbon atoms and R is preferably methyl or ethyl. The amines used as starting materials may be prepared by reacting a compound of the formula <FORM:0636648/IV (b)/2> with a compound of the formula Y-A-Y wherein Y is a halogen atom in an alkaline medium; picrates of these compounds are described. Examples are given in which R and R1 are methyl or ethyl, X is iodine, bromine or p-toluene sulphonate and A is a propane butane pentane or hexane residue.
