Abstract

636,341. Valve relay circuits. TRIST & CO., Ltd., R., and CHAMBERS, W. A. April 8, 1947, No. 9333. [Class 40 (vi)] [Also in Group XL (b)] In a detection or warning system, a change in the voltage across a photo-electric cell is used to bias the control electrode negatively with respect to the cathode of a cold cathode valve and so to initiate the discharge through the valve. In a smoke detection and warning system, two photo-electric cells 4, 5, normally illuminated with the same intensity, are connected in series across a battery 11. The cold cathode of a valve 14 is connected to the mid-point of the battery and the control electrode of the valve is connected to the junction of the cells 4 and 5. The light beam falling on photo-electric cell 5 is protected from smoke which reduces the amount of light falling on the cell 4, and causes a small negative potential relative to the cathode to be applied to the control grid of valve 14, initiating a discharge through the valve and energizing a relay winding 18. Relay contact 26 connects a visible warning signal 22 and an audible alarm 21 to a potential source 27. Relay contacts 19, 20 break the anode circuit of the valve, and connect the relay winding across the supply 27 so that the alarm signals continue till pushbutton 23 is pressed to reset the circuit.
