Abstract

636,109. Cam gearing for transmitting rotary or rectilinear motion ; differential gearing. NICHOLLS, K. H. March 2, 1946, No. 6584. [Classes 80 (ii) and 80 (iii)] In cam gearing in which positive rotary or rectilinear motion is transmitted between three relatively movable members, two of which are formed with opposed cam surfaces adapted upon relative movement to oscillate one or more connecting members such as balls or rollers freely mounted in the other member and engaging said cam surfaces, the connecting members are adapted to be oscillated in two directions transverse to each other and the general direction of movement of the cam members. Figs. 10, 11 and 12 show an application of the invention for the transmission of linear movement between cam members 9, 10 and a supporting member 11 for the connecting balls 12. Pairs of cam surfaces of wave form 9a, 10a, and 9b, 10b are provided on the respective members 9 and 10 at a phase displacement of 90 degrees. The connecting balls thus oscillate in two directions at right angles upon relative movement between the cam members and the supporting member which are mounted for linear movement in a supporting frame 112. By holding one of the three members, a reduced or increased movement is transmitted between the other two members or the device may function as a differential mechanism between three movable elements. This arrangement is shown in Fig. 14 adapted for the transmission of rotary movement, the pairs of wave surfaces being provided on opposed faces of rotable cam members and the connecting balls being supported in a further rotary member. In this rotary application the cam surfaces need not be in themselves of wave form but may be of swash plate or conic form arranged however to impart to the connecting members oscillations in the two desired transverse directions. Specifications 636,163 and 636,164 are referred to.
