Abstract
636,085. Converting; automatic voltage control systems. HIGHAM, E. H., KAY, A. G., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Nov. 27, 1947, No. 31426. [Classes 38 (ii) and 38 (iv)] Apparatus for supplying a uni-directional voltage comprises a gaseous discharge valve, means to cause the valve to generate current pulses, which pulses are rectified and smoothed, a condenser, connected across the valve, adapted to be charged during pulses and to partially discharge through the valve during pulses and means, dependent upon the output voltage, for regulating the voltage to which the condenser charges so as to maintain the output voltage constant. In a preferred manner of carrying out the invention means are provided to maintain the output voltage constant. A condenser C1 is charged through a valve V2 and when a thyratron V3 becomes conducting, due to its grid receiving a positive pulse from the cathode of a valve V1 forming part of a valve oscillator, a current passes comprising a current drawn from the valve V2 and one drawn from the condenser C1 and at the end of a pulse period the thyratron is extinguished by means of a delay line D. Energy is thus delivered to a valve V4 by means of a transformer T2 being rectified and smoothed, so producing a negative uni-directional voltage at the negative EHT terminal. A stabilized potential point A is established by means of a resistor R3 and neon tubes V6, V7 and any variation in the negative EHT voltage from a value pre-set by a potentiometer P2 varies the voltage applied to the grid of a valve V5 and hence the grid of valve V2 to alter the voltage to which C1 charges, thus controlling the pulse amplitude to maintain the EHT voltage at the initial level. The delay line may be omitted by using the pulse generated in the transformer T2 when the valve V4 ceases to conduct to extinguish the thyratron. The arrangement prevents undue ripples in the output voltage and the valve 14 is not required to withstand inverse voltages other than those due to the D.C. output. Fig. 2 (not shown) illustrates a modified arrangement whereby a positive EHT voltage 'is obtained by reversely connecting the valve V4.
