Abstract

636,017. Magnetic sound recording. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., GAYFORD, M. L., and CRAGG, W. D. Jan. 16, 1948, No. 1366. [Class 40 (ii)] Distortion in magnetic recording is reduced by negative feed back of signals as distorted by the recording medium. The feed back signal may be obtained from an 'auxiliary pick-up head, Figs. 1 ... 3 (not shown), and applied through a phase-correcting network to a point in the recording amplifier. In a second embodiment, Fig. 4, the feed back signal is provided by a winding 14, placed between two recording windings 12, 13 on a hybrid recording head, Fig. 5 (not shown). The signal is passed through a low-pass filter 15 and amplifier 16 to the input of the recording amplifier 11. In a third embodiment, Fig. 6, the output of the recording amplifier is applied both to a recording head and to a transformer 26 which has a core made of the same permanent magnetic dust as that used in the recording medium so that the same distortion is introduced. High-frequency bias from oscillator 31 is also applied to transformer 26 and the distorted output fed back via a lowpass filter 28, an integrating amplifier 29, and a phase adjuster 30 to the input of amplifier 11. A filter 40 prevents H.F. bias from feeding back from the recording head to transformer 26.
