Abstract

798,948. Colour television. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. April 27, 1955 [May 3, 1954; May 20, 1954], No. 12214/55. Class 40 (3). Television signals including a 0-3 Mc/s. luminance signal from a source 11 and a 3.6 Mc/s. modulated colour sub-carrier from source 18 are recorded on tracks 14 and 15 of a magnetic tape 17 whilst a 2.4 Mc/s. pilot signal is added on a third track 16 and serves during reproduction to eliminate from the sub-carrier components frequency variations imparted by longitudinal speed variations in the tape motion. Before recording the sub-carrier components are reduced to a band of 2-3 Mc/s. by heterodyning in modulator stage 36 with a 6 Mc/s. signal derived by converter 39 from a 3.6 Me/s. source 38, the difference frequency components being selected by filter 37. The pilot tone is derived by a further modulator 140 as the difference between the 6 Mc/s. from converter 39 and the 3.6 Mc/s. from source 38. Signals reproduced from the tape tracks are obtained through amplifiers 27, 28, 29, the luminance signal being used directly whilst the sub-carrier components are restored to their original frequencies by heterodyning in modulator 132 with a 6 Mc/s. signal and selecting the difference frequencies by filter 134. The 6 Mc/s. signal is derived by the addition in modulator 130 of a 3.6 Mc/s. wave from source 133 with the 2.4 Mc/s. pilot signal. Since the pilot carries frequency variations imparted by the tape, the resulting 6 Mc/s. varies likewise and compensates for the corresponding variation imparted to the sub-carrier components. Figs. 1-3 (not shown) illustrate minor variations in the way in which the pilot signal is derived and the sub-carrier components are restored in reproduction. Fig. 5 (not shown) illustrates a modification in which the pilot signal is reduced to 0.8 Mc/s. and recorded on the same track as the sub-carrier components.
