Abstract

636,000. Automatic control systems for engines. HALL, L. L. Feb. 18, 1947, No. 4674. [Class 38 (iv)] The fluid fuel supply to an engine is controlled by an electric relay which is energized in accordance with two factors, the product of which is proportional to engine load. As shown, Fig. 1, the engine governor comprises the soft iron yokes 1, 2 which support the winding 3 and between which the coil 4 moves in the gap magnetic field, in the direction of the arrows and against the restoring spring 6 in accordance with the product of the currents in the coils 3, 4. Coil 4 is mechanically coupled to the fuel or working medium control valve. Where the prime mover drives a generator, the governor may be connected as a watt-meter to the output of the latter while if a mechanical load is driven through a shaft, electrical signals proportional to the shaft speed and torque are applied to the coils 3, 4 respectively. A centrifugal governor may be combined with the present governor to compensate for inaccuracies in the latter and the normal dynamometer type movement may be employed in place of the form shown in Fig. 1.
