635,925. Gauging alignment of vehicle wheels. FRIESTEDT, A. A. July 17, 1947, No. 19153. Convention date, April 24, 1940. [Class 106 (ii)] Apparatus for checking the angular relationship between a pair of axles, such as the wheel axles of a motor vehicle, comprises a base 9 (not shown), to be secured to a wheel 7 on the rear axle, an arm 11 adjustably mounted on the base and carrying a groove disc 10 to which is secured one end of a line or cord 13, a stand 14 carrying a pointer 20, and a second stand 15 over which the free weighted or spring- tensioned end of the cord is passed. There are also a pair of turntables 22 for the front wheels, and a measuring rod 24. In use, each front wheel is raised and rotated with the pointer 20 in contact with the periphery of the tyre, whereby a circular mark 27 is made on the tyre, the wheels then lowered on to the turntables, and transverse marks 28 then made on the tyres at the same height as the cord 13. The wheel 7 is raised so that it just frictionally engages the floor, and turned to bring the arm 11 into the dotted line position. The stand 14 is moved to position the pointer 20 so that it touches the cord 13 in the disc 10, the wheel rotated so that the arm 11 is in the full line position with the disc 10 at the same height as before, and the forward end of the cord adjusted so that the pointer 20 is just touching. The cord 13 thus extends perpendicular to the rear axle and is used as a basis for the adjustment of the front axle. The front wheels are rendered independently adjustable, and measurements made from the cord to the marks 27, 28 on the rear tyre. The rod 24, which is used to check the distances between the front wheels, has a brad 25 which.is pushed into the tyre 5 at the intersection of the marks 27, 28. The stand 15 may be pivotally mounted in a box 16 in which all the apparatus, except the rod 24, may be packed.
