[Class 68 (ii)] In the construction of piers, breakwaters, quays, &c. an open-bottomed caisson, the bases of the walls of which may conform to the contour of the ground on which it is to be set, is built on supports above high-tide level on temporary staging carried by piles, these supports and other obstructive parts of the substructure being removed by explosive charges simultaneously electrically fired so that the caisson sinks to its required position. It may then be filled with concrete, stones, earth, &c. As shown, iron, reinforced concrete, timber, &c. piles b, arranged to avoid the walls of the caisson, carry staging a across which timber girders reproducing the ground contour are laid for supporting an iron, reinforced concrete, timber &c. caisson c built up thereon; the caisson may have bulkhead walls d and is at least partly bottomless. When the caisson has sunk into place after removal of the crossgirders &c. by the explosive charges, the piles b may be left in place and further piles may be driven in through the open bottom.
