Abstract

634,500. Exercising-apparatus. JOHNSON, W. J. S. Jan. 10, 1947, No. 903. [Class 132 (i)] An apparatus for exercising those muscles of the body normally utilized in rowing and cycling comprises a seat and a handlebar, each carried on a lever pivoted to the frame of the apparatus, and means for oscillating the levers so that they always move simultaneously in the same angular direction but with the seat-supporting lever moving at a lower rate than the handlebar-supporting lever. The means for oscillating the levers may comprise a rotatable crank and rods connecting the crank to the levers. Rotation of the crank may be effected by means of a shaft carrying pedals, this shaft being connected through gearing to the crank. A motor may also be provided to oscillate the levers and a clutch mechanism may be associated with the shaft and pedals to render the latter inoperative when required. In Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, the apparatus is provided with seat 28 and handlebar 21 supported on levers 24 and 19 respectively. Levers 24 and 19 are pivoted to the frame of the apparatus at 25 and 20 respectively and are also pivotally connected to rods 34 and 33 respectively. Rods 34 and 33 are journalled to crank pin 31 on crank web 30. Crank web 30 is carried on crankshaft 281 and this shaft also carries spur gear 32 which meshes with spur gear 39 carried on shaft 40. Shaft 40 also carries levers 53 with their pedals 54. Rotation of shaft 40 may also be effected by means of electric motor 46 with the aid of worm 43 and worm wheel 42. A switch situated at 55 on the handlebar controls the electric motor while an upward pull on knob 52 causes lever 51 to clutch spur gear 39 on to shaft 40. Thus when spur gear 39 is clutched on to shaft 40, operation of motor 46 causes movement of the pedals, the handlebar and the seat, or movement of the pedals by the user causes movement of the handlebar and the seat. When spur gear 39 is disengaged from shaft 40, movement of the handlebar by the user causes movement of the seat. Specification 478,675 is referred to.
