Abstract

648,794. Water-cycles. ROSE, T. G. (Castellini, A. P.). Feb. 9, 1948, No. 3767. [Class 114] [Also in Group XXI] An apparatus for traversing the surface of water under pedal and hand propulsion comprises a buoyant stretcher - like framework 1 upon which are mounted pedals 8 and handlebars 15, the operation of which via cords 11, 11a, and pulleys 12, 21, respectively imparts a rotational motion to a propeller 2. A gearing device, Fig. 3, to the shaft 23 of which pulleys 12, 21 are keyed is fitted to the framework and by means of oppositely disposed ratchet- and pawl devices converts the reciprocatory movement of pedals and handlebar to a unidirectional torque rotating the propeller shaft 3. Steering of the apparatus is by a rudder 45 controlled by the hand levers 52 and connecting rod 53. In addition to or as an alternative to the rudder, steering may be by reorientation of the gear housing 7 and propeller shaft 3. The buoyancy of the apparatus may be improved by floats 58. Articulated vanes 60, pivotally mounted about their forward edge, may be provided under the pedals 8 as shown and also on the arms of the handlebars 15 in order to assist the manual propulsive means. These means may also be assisted by the provision of a small power unit such as a small electric motor or internal combustion engine. The hand-operated propulsive means may be disengaged by sliding the anchoring points of the ends of the cord 11a along the handlebars thereby slackening and disengaging the cord from its associated pulley 21.
