Abstract

634,444. Temperature-variable resistances. SANGAMO WESTON, Ltd., and McBRIDE, M. G. Dec. 17, 1946, No. 37188. [Class 37] A device for measuring temperatures up to approximately 500‹ C. comprises a heatsensitive resistance element consisting of a tightly wound helix of platinum or nickel resistance wire, wound on an anodised aluminium former, and enclosed in one end of a hermetically-sealed, stainless steel tube, connections to the resistance element being made by ductile or flexible conductors with fibreglass insulation in an intermediate part of the tube which may be shaped to avoid obstacles to two conductors of a metal-to-glass seal at the other end of the sealed tube. The resistance element 11 is wound in the grooves 14a and 14b of a two-start thread on the surface of a cylindrical former 15, the threads being connected together by a diametral slot 16 across the base of the former 15. The surface of the former 15 is anodised to provide an insulating covering, and the former, together with the resistance wire wound round it, are enclosed in a thin, tightly-fitting alumina-coated aluminium sleeve 25, which itself is fitted into one end of a stainless steel tube 12. The former 15 and its sleeve 25 are held rigidly in position by mica washers 26, 27 and 28 at each end. The leads of the resistance element are brought up through fibre-glass insulation to a metalto-glass seal 34 with two conductors 33, so that by soldering the metal flange 35 of the seal to an extension 37 of the stainless steel tube 12, and also sealing the other end of the tube 12 by a soldered disc 29, the resistance element is contained in an hermetically sealed compartment, which may, if desired, be filled with an inert gas. Further connections are made externally to the resistance 11 by a rubber-covered cable 40 terminating in two sockets 43 which can be plugged onto the external portions of the conductors 33 of the metal-to-glass seal, the connections being kept in position by a screwed gland nut 51.
