Abstract

634,408. Adjusting internal-expanding brakes. PARKER, H., and ROWLAND, T. C. E. June 18, 1947, No. 16095. [Class 103 (i)] An automatic adjusting device for a twin shoe internalexpanding brake comprises a composite strut of adjustable length supported by bearing surfaces at its ends coacting with a brake shoe and a rocker member for displacing the strut and means mounted on the strut, and operatively connected to the rocker member, for moving its composite parts endwise relatively to each other to increase its length, the said means being actuated when excessive relative angular movement between the rocker member and the strut takes place. In the embodiment shown, recesses 31 in a rocker member 14 engage the inner ends of two variable struts. These latter comprise housings 15 enclosing screwed sleeves 17, one of which is rotated by a worm shaft 19 and the other by a flexible cable 32 extending through the member 14. Rotation of the sleeves 17 causes inner screwed members 16 to extend, thus reducing the clearance between the linings 22 and the drum 20. A pawl 23 having lost-motion connection with a ratchet-wheel attached to the worm-shaft 19 is carried by a lever 25 mounted for independent rotation on the said worm-shaft and connected by a link 26 to a lug 27 on the rocking member 14. Excessive angular displacement of the rocking member 14 relatively to the strut due to wear on the linings 22 causes the pawl 23 to slip a tooth during application of the brake and thus initiate an increase of strut length on release of the brake. Specifications 446,339, 456,238 and 479,499 are referred to. Specification 492,880 also is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
