Abstract
A concentrate of mixed tocopherols is obtained by the high-vacuum distillation of a vegetable oil in the conventional manner, e.g. at a pressure of 0.01 mm. to 0.001 mm. and a temperature about 150 DEG to 250 DEG C. In example (5), soya bean oil is distilled at 150-170 DEG C. at 0.003 mm. pressure to obtain mixed a -, g - and d -tocopherol.ALSO:d -Tocophenol, hithertofore unknown, is obtained by treating a vegetable oil, e.g. soya bean oil, to separate a mixed tocopherol concentrate and then separating d -tocopherol from the mixed concentrate by fractional crystallization and/or chromatography. The methods by which the tocopherol concentrate may be obtained from the vegetable oil are high-vacuum, unobstructed-path distillation, selective adsorption, solvent extraction, saponification and combinations thereof. When using high vacuum distillation the phosphatide sludge is first removed and the mixed concentrate obtained as a 1 per cent "cut" of the distillant. In separating the mixed concentrate by fractional crystallization the tocopherols are esterified with an acid halide such as palmitoyl chloride, lauroyl bromide, myristoyl iodide, dinitrobenzoyl chloride and phenylazobenzoyl chloride. The a -, b - and g -tocopherols are precipitated whilst the d -tocopherol remains in solution. Alternative d -tocopherol is obtained by the usual chromatographic methods. Detailed examples are given.
