Abstract
633,258. Tumbling-barrels. WINTER, H. A. M. Feb. 9, 1948, No. 3798. [Class 60] A polishing or rumbling machine of the barrel type comprises a number of barrels revolubly mounted on a rotatable frame, mechanism for turning the frame to bring the barrels successively into positions where they can be loaded or unloaded, and power-operated mechanism for driving the barrels with clutches interposed for disconnecting the drives in the loading and unloading positions of the barrels. The machine is particularly suitable for performing the operations of flash-removing, scouring and final polishing on plastic moulded products. Four barrels 14 are mounted on shafts 13 journalled in the arms of spiders 11, 12 carried by a shaft 10 which can be rotated by a handcrank 34 through gearing 35, 36, 30, 29 so as to bring a selected barrel opposite an opening, normally closed by a door 40, in a casing 39. A sprocket 17, carried by a sleeve on the shaft 10, is driven by an electric motor 21 through a belt 20 ; an endless chain 15 passes around the sprocket 17 and around sprockets 16 which, through dog clutches 22, rotate the barrels 14. When a barrel 14 is brought opposite the opening in the casing 39, the clutch 22 for that barrel can be disengaged by means. of a handle 27 on the clutch, access to the handle being obtained through a door with a transparent panel. Radial members 37 are disposed between the barrels; during the emptying of a barrel, the contents slide down one of the radial members 37 into a collecting trough 51 and thence by shoot 52 to an agitated screen 53 and finally into a bin 56 ; coarse particles fall into a tray 44 which can be withdrawn from the casing 39 through a door 45. The barrels are closed by a solid plate or by a mesh screen; in the latter case, the interior of the casing 39 is connected to a suction fan. The Provisional Specification. states that the air drawn through the casing can be heated or cooled as required for maintaining the best temperature conditions for efficient polishing.
