Abstract
632,790. Bearings; lubricating. WILLYSOVERLAND MOTORS, Inc. June 14, 1946, No. 17891. Convention date, Aug. 14, 1945. [Class 12 (i)] [Also in Group XXIV] Lubrication of the bearing between a stationary shaft, supported in end walls, and a rotatable element journalled on the shaft, is effected from a reservoir recess formed on the outer surface of the shaft and supplied with lubricant from a passage in the end wall through an interposed thrust-bearing washer having a lubricant passageway. As applied to a variable-speed gear-box, the lay shaft 35, Fig. 1, is fixed and is recessed to form two lubricant reservoirs 61, 61<SP>1</SP>, supplying diagonal channels 59 to the bearing sleeves 56, Fig. 10, with which the bore of the gear cluster 33, 37, 38, 39 is fitted. The reservoir recesses consist of spaced surfaces 60, Fig. 9, of flattened curvature. The recess 61 is supplied through a recess 73, in a thrust-bearing 65 of laminated construction with bearing material and steel backing, Figs. 7, 8, held in place by a lip 70 bent to enter a lubricant channel 71 in the end wall 11 of the gear-box 10. The recess 61<SP>1</SP> is supplied through a rear thrust-bearing which consists of two separate discs 75, 76, Figs. 5, 6, recessed as at 79 and 80 to receive lubricant, disc 76 being dowelled to the end wall 23 while disc 75 is free to rotate. The recesses 61, 611 are in the lower part of the shaft and out of the direct line of applied load. The shaft 35 and a parallel shaft for the reverse-drive idler pinion are held against rotation by the flat ends of a bar engaging transverse slots therein (bar 48, Fig. 2 (not shown)).
