Abstract

A liquid organo-siloxane polymer is used as a mould lubricant or as a parting compound to prevent adhesion of thermoplastic sheets to each other or to metal. The liquid polymer may be thickened by addition of metal soaps, carbon black or silica aerogel thereto. The polymer may be made by adding a mixture of diethoxy-dimethylsilane and ethoxy-trimethylsilane in the mol. ratio of 19 to 1 slowly to water containing sulphuric acid. Hydrolysis and condensation occur simultaneously, an oily liquid being produced. This liquid is washed to remove residuel acid and heated to 250 DEG C. at 0.5 inch mercury absolute pressure to remove volatile components, e.g. low molecular weight polymers. Specifications 3462/46 (as open to inspection under Sect. 91) and 572,331 are referred to.ALSO:A thin film of a liquid or pasty organo-siloxane polymer is interposed between organic plastic material and the mould in which it is being shaped. The liquid may be thickened by adding thereto metal soaps, carbon black or silica aerogel. The invention may be applied, inter alia, to the moulding of hollow articles of long internal draw, e.g. in the blowing of plastic bottles, to the rubber bag used in rubber bag moulding, and to a cardboard mould used to make a plaque.
