[Classes 20(ii) and 20(iv)] Foundations, underground basements, cellars, tanks &c. which are waterproofed by the application of bitumen-loaded sheeting in two or more layers have joints formed between the main waterproofing layers at corners between structural surfaces, by means of strips of bitumen-loaded hessian along the edges of the main waterproof layers, the strips being bent to conform with the angle at the joint and overlapping each other on the main waterproofing layers and being welded in position by the application of heat. A foundation may be formed by a ground slab 2, Fig. 1, of concrete, to which two or more layers 3, 4 of bitumen-loaded hessian sheeting are applied and welded to each other and to the slab by surface heating. Where the wall 1 meets the foundation, joints are established between the main vertical layers 3, 4 and the horizontal main layers 3, 4 projecting beyond the wall, by bending the lower edges of the inner and outer vertical layers outwardly to form overlapping flanges 6, 5 which are then welded by heating to each other and to the horizontal main layer 4. Adjacent layers break joint with each other, horizontally and vertically. A protective coating 14 of cement is applied and a skin wall 15 may be erected for the protection of the main waterproofing of the structure. If the ground cavity is insufficient to permit working exteriorly of the main walls, a skin wall is first built, waterproofing layers applied interiorly thereof and the main walls then erected in close juxtaposition to the waterproofing. Applications to form corner joints where the main waterproofing layers are (a) bitumenloaded felt fibre sheeting or (b) bitumenloaded hessian sheeting are described.
