632,147. Coiling-machines. POURTIER, G. June 16, 1945, No. 15358. Convention date, March 29, 1943. [Class 78 (v)] [Also in Group XXXVI] In the process of drawing out continuous flexible products of great length, the product is wound onto and off a rotary drum 4, Fig. 6, and the coil formed thereon is continually shifted by the application of force to the coil substantially throughout the entire circle. Figs. 5; 6. The wire straight from the wire making machine is coiled round the rotating capstan 4 and before passing on to a bobbin. Sliding shoes 5, separated from one another by packing 6 and covering nearly the whole of the circumference of the drum 4, are impelled by pairs of fingers 8 which are made to pivot about spindles 9 fixed to drum 4, by arms 13 at the end of which are rollers 14 which run over the helix-shaped surface of the stationary cam 3. Springs keep the fingers in position. Rotation of the drum causes the slippers to rotate and also, as they rotate, to continuously urge the coil along. In the alternative form of Fig. 7 the capstan is formed of a circular series of shoes 17 upon which the wire is wound. The shoes are secured to rotating wheel 15 by notches 16 and run upon rollers 19 which work in helicoidal grooves upon stationary cam 3. The helix has a sharp return " run " so that the wire coil is continuously pressed in one direction.
