Abstract
891,125. Winding bobbins. BONE BROS. Ltd. Sept. 9, 1958 [Sept. 18, 1957], No. 29416/57. Class 120(2) [Also in Group XXX] A machine for coiling material, e.g. piping, comprises a reel 1, Fig. 1, and means for laying the material evenly across the reels, both driven from a variable speed D.C. motor 11, and means for synchronizing the speed at which the reel and laying means are driven with the speed at which the material is fed to the machine. As shown, posts 10 carried by arms 9 mounted eccentrically on spokes 7 of the reel 1 prevent axial displacement of the piping 65 when coiled upon the arms. The reel 1 is driven by a rubbercovered roller 19 geared to a counter-shaft 12 driven through reduction gearing 13 and chain 15 by the motor 11, the roller 19 being made to move into and out of contact with the periphery of the reel 1 by a lever 21 controlled by pedals 23, 26. A carriage 51, Fig. 6, provided with rotatable posts 52 and horizontal rotatable rollers 53 to guide the piping on the reels 1 is reciprocated horizontally at right angles to the direction of feed of the piping by a nut 50 engaging a rotatable screw 49 geared to a shaft 40 rotatable intermittently in opposite directions through alternate engagement with oppositely rotating ratchet wheels 35, 39, Figs. 8, 9, driven by chains 34, 38 passing over them in opposite direction, each chain being secured at one end to a spring anchored to the machine frame and at the other end to one of a pair of levers 32, 33 oscillated by an eccentric 30 driven by the counter-shaft 12 through a chain 28. The traversing speed of the carriage 51 is varied by adjusting the fulcrum of the levers 32, 33 by a threaded rod 58 operated by a handwheel 57 and the traverse of the carriage is limited by pegs 55 adjustable thereon which alternately engage at opposite ends of the traverse a post 56 which effects declutching and clutching of the respective ratchet wheels with the shaft 40 to reverse the direction of traverse. The carriage may also be traversed by hand by means of a hand wheel 59 connected to the shaft 40. The speed of the motor 11 is varied by adjusting the voltage by a rheostat controlled by an arm 61 carrying a roller 62 bearing upon the piping 65. According to the Provisional Specification the machine is driven by an electric motor connected by Vee belt to a Carter gear on the output side of which is reduction gearing connected by chain drive to the countershaft 12 through a friction clutch which provides the slip necessary to synchronize the feeding and reeling speeds.
