Abstract

631,496. Printing-machines. BRITISH HARTFORD-FAIRMONT SYNDICATE, Ltd. July 7, 1947, No. 17940. Convention date, July 5, 1946. [Class 100 (ii)] A screen device for printing bottles &c. on more than one side is described for printing one face of four bottles at each intermittent rotation of a carrier 17, the bottles being rotated 90 degrees at each :movement of the carrier, 17, Fig. 3, which rotates about a vertical shaft 16. The bottles B are held between a lower chuck 19, rotatable upon a spindle 50, and an upper chuck 20 which is yieldably mounted and is automatically raised when the printed bottle returns to the loading and unloading position 1, Fig. 4, the printing positions 2, 3, 4, 5 being all arranged at 72 degrees apart. The bottles are also held by a forked device 67. The carrier 17 is rotated by an oscillating lever arm 32, Fig. 2, which is oscillated by a pneumatic motor C, Fig. 2, a pin 33 on the arm 32 engaging a tube 34 on the carrier. The carrier is held in printing position by a pin 38 carried by the piston rod 35 of a motor C3. At each intermittent movement of the carrier 17 the bottles are rotated a quarter of a revolution by gears 52, which engage a fixed segmental gear 53. During the final movement from position 5 to position 1 the the position of the bottles is controlled by pins 58, 59 on the gears 52 and cams 56, 57, which are arranged so that the chucks do not rotate on their axes as they pass to position 1. The machine is controlled by pneumatic pressure devices arranged as shown in Fig. 13, in which a pressure line 200 supplies the source of power, and V" is a valve controlled by a pedal 201 for starting the operations. The piston rod 28 of motor C operates valves V, V<SP>6</SP>, and piston rod 35 controls valves V<SP>8</SP>, V<SP>9</SP>, and the driving-pin 33 controls valve V<SP>13</SP>. The movement of the chuck 20 is controlled by the piston rod 77 of a motor C<SP>4</SP>, a projection 78 on the rod engaging a slide 62 in which the holder is mounted against the action of a spring 72, Fig. 3. The rod 77 is normally held raised by a pivoted latch 83 which is tripped by a motor C<SP>5</SP>. Each screen printing device, Fig. 7, comprises a squeegee 26, a frame 24 and a screen 23. Each screen frame 24 is moved in a direction perpendicular to the axis of the bottle by a motor C<SP>2</SP>, and the scraper is given a traversing movement over the bottle surface by a motor C<SP>1</SP>. The squeegees are pivotally mounted and at its bottom position each squeegee receives ink from a reservoir 123. The squeegees are mounted in pivoted holders which can be held by catches 135 to hold the squeegees out of action. The squeegees are automatically rotated at the end of each movement so as to operate with their trailing edges. A safety device prevents operation of a motor C<SP>2</SP> when no bottle is in position to be printed by closing a safety valve C', Fig. 4 : one valve is arranged adjacent to each chuck.
