[Class 106 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVI] In a maximum demand meter, which essentially includes a sun and planet differ ential gear, Fig. 1, during each measuring period a first member, for example a meter disc or rotor 10, drives one sun-wheel 11 of the differential gear to produce equal and opposite rotation of the other sun-wheel 18, whereby the latter moves a third member, for example a pusher arm 19 against the restraint of control spring 22 secured to shaft 17 fixed to sun-wheel 18, to advance a third member, for example a pointer 20, and at the end of each measuring period the normally stationary planet carrier 14 is released to zeroize the arm 19. The planet carrier 14 extending within hollow sun-wheel shafts 12, 17 carries at one end a brake drum 24, Fig. 2, and during each measuring period a spring 38 urges a lever arm 28 to press brake pads 25 on to drum 24 and a tension spring 39 co-operating with spring 38 urges a lever arm 36 to press a roller 29 into contact with the surfaces of high- and lowspeed cams 30, 31. If the speeds of cams 30, 31 are respectively one revolution per minute and one revolution per 15 minutes, then once every 15 minutes the notches in cams 30, 31 are in coincidence opposite roller 29 and arm 36 moves downwardly and part 36a then engages screw 40 and the pads 25 are lifted from the brake drum 24. The planet carrier 14 is therefore released and control spring 22 operates to force pusher arm 19 to zero. The cams 30, 31 are positioned appropriately in a synchronous motor drive geared for fast and slow speeds, Fig. 3 (not shown), wherein provision is made for setting the attitudes of the cams and a pointer rotates with the slow speed cam. In a modification a solenoid controlled by a time switch lifts the brake on planet carrier 14 at the end of each measuring period. In a further modification the sun-wheel 11 is driven step-by-step by an impulse device energized by a remote energy meter element.
