Abstract
630,888. Circuits for electron multipliers; valve modulating circuits. JONES, S. Dec. 10, 1946, No. 36440. [Classes 40 (v) and 40 (vi)] In an electron multiplier circuit, particularly for amplifying small D.C. potentials, a source of alternating modulating potential is applied to two dynodes, in push-pull, an output potential appearing across a circuit in the anode lead of the multiplier tube, tuned to the third harmonic of the alternating potential. The modulation components are additive, whereas the components fed to the output by capacitive coupling tend to cancel. The output signal may be rectified to give an amplified version of the input. Light, incident upon the photoelectric-cathode 4 causes the emission of electrons which pass to the dynodes 6 ... 14, an increased current flowing to the final anode 5. A source 30 of A.C. feeding dynodes 10, 12 modulates the electron stream, the circuit 27 being tuned to the third harmonic to pass a signal modulated according to the level of the light incident upon the cathode 4.
