Abstract

630,829. Hydraulic shock absorbers. GIRLING, Ltd., and FREEMAN, F. G. Nov. 12, 1947, No. 30063. [Class 108 (iii)] In a hydraulic shock absorber of the type in which a vane secured to or integral with an angularly movable shaft is adapted to oscillate in a closed damper chamber of quadrant shape, and in which the chamber is filled with liquid which is forced through a restricted passage of controlled area by the movement of the vane, the vane is formed as a hollow member containing liquid for the recuperation of the damper chamber and is provided with valve controlled outlets through which liquid can pass from the vane into the chamber, when the pressure in the chamber on either side of the vane falls below a predetermined recuperation pressure. In the arrangement shown, a vane 10, adapted to oscillate within a closed chamber 11, is formed integral with a hollow spindle 17, a bore in which communicates through a passage 24 with a cylindrical bore 25 extending through the vane 10 at right-angles to the axis of the spindle 17. The bore 25 is filled through the outer end of the spindle 17. The ends 26 of the bore 25 are each provided with an opening 27 which is normally closed by a blade spring 28, whereby liquid in the bore 25 can flow into the chamber 11 if the pressure in the latter falls below that in the bore 25 during operation of the shock absorber. Openings 30 in the chamber 11 communicate with bores 31, 32, Fig. 3, on the body of the shock absorber which are connected by a passage 35 and by a byepass 33 controlled by a needle valve 34. Excessive pressure in the chamber 11 on either side of the vane, is relieved through the passage 35 which is normally closed by a spring- loaded plunger 42 slidable in a spring-loaded ported sleeve 36. Any convenient arrangement may be provided for bleeding air from the damper chamber.
