Abstract
630,620. Collapsable huts, theatres, warehouses, &c. LONGLEY, H. J. Jan. 20, 1947, No. 1831. Convention date, Jan. 26, 1946. [Class 20(i)] A roof or building construction such as a shed, storehouse, mess, barracks or cinema comprises a number of spaced arched ribs 1 formed out of mesh-work, metal latticing, " Weld-mesh " (Registered Trade Mark) &c. bent to the desired curvature to form a supporting surface for covering material and one or more inwardly projecting stiffening webs 1A to each arched rib, such webs being of hollow section e.g. channel-section, V-shape, U-shape, with its two outer edges secured to the arched ribs by welding, or, if the webs are made of mesh-work, by hooking over the ends of the rods or wires forming the webs, such hooks being preferably closed down to grip securely. As shown, the stiffening webs 1A, Fig. 7, are of V-section and are formed of metal mesh-work which is hooked by means of hooks 3, 4 to longitudinal rods or wires 10 in the arched members 1. The spaces between adjacent arched ribs 1 are filled by strips 14 of mesh-work having cross rods 14b which are hooked to cross rods 9 in the arched ribs 1. The ribs 1 and webs 1A are formed in situ of short lengths of mesh-work which are joined, as at 2A, by hooking or welding or both. The longitudinal members 10 of the arched ribs are passed at their ends through concrete or wooden footings 6 whilst the ends of the innermost members 13 of the reinforcing webs 1A rest on wedges 7, 7. The vault and the ends of the structure are covered with flexible water proof fabric. The ends are strengthened by a number of vertical; horizontal or radial members. The arched members are built up in situ lying on their edges with the webs 1A lying in horizontal planes (Fig. 12) and the footings 6, which are added at this stage, in a vertical position. The strengthening upright 12A (of mesh-work) may then be erected and used with lifting line 20a as a derrick for lifting the arched members into position.
