Abstract

630,210. Decorating cakes. SEAGREN, C. E., and MOWLL, P. W. Nov. 7, 1946, No. 33175. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Nov. 7, 1946.] [Class 28(i)] An edible decorative design in relief is made up on a paper, &c. backing which is inverted and placed on a cake, the backing then being wetted and stripped off like a transfer. A suitable material for the design is a piping jelly, made of agar, glycerine, citric or tartaric acid and vegetable colouring and flavouring. The backing paper 11 may be temporarily gummed or pinned to the edges of a support of stiff cardboard during making up and then inverting on to the cake. The design is built up by a stencil plate 21, Fig. 3, the cut outs of which are filled with the decorative material.' Another stencil plate 25 may be superposed with different cut outs so that part 16 of the decoration may be further built up with another and different coloured material. This plate may then be removed and another stencil plate superimposed on the first plate to build up a three layer design or to colour particular parts of the design. For packing and transport the edges of the paper back. ing are folded and gummed under the cardboard tray and the built up decoration thereon is protected by an embossed ring 31, Fig. 6, and if wanted, a further cardboard ring 34, the whole then being covered in a cellophane wrapper 36 with handling flaps 38 and then packed in a carton, Fig. 7. The building up of the design by stencils may be done in an automatic machine which moves the stencil plates in timed relation to a roll of paper comprising the carrier, moved past the various depositing stations. The design materials may be applied by spray guns, brushes or like tools.
